Population tops 1,030,000 mark

Saskatchewan’s population jumped by 16,509 between July 1, 2008 and July 1, 2009. That’s the largest population increase in any 12-month period since 1952-53.

Saskatchewan grew by 4,491 people in the second quarter of 2009 and now stands at 1,030,129 – the first time the population has topped the 1,030,000 mark since 1987.

Premier Brad Wall said the province’s continued growth is one more sign Saskatchewan is moving forward. He made the announcement at Mosaic Stadium to highlight the fact that Saskatchewan’s new residents would fill up half the stands in the stadium.

“Even during a recession, more and more people are discovering what many of us have known for a long time – Saskatchewan is a great place to live,” Wall said. “More people are staying here. More people are moving here. And it all adds up to the fastest rate of growth in more than 50 years.”

More people continue to move into Saskatchewan than move out. Saskatchewan enjoyed net interprovincial migration of 550 people and net international migration of 2,664 people in the second quarter of 2009.

Wall said Saskatchewan continues to offer many opportunities for both current Saskatchewan residents and those from other places.

“Saskatchewan is one of only two provinces in Canada with more people working than a year ago and there are still well over 6,000 job opportunities posted on the saskjobs.ca website,” Wall said. “On top of that, Saskatchewan continues to be one of the most affordable places in Canada to live. And we have great weather in September.

“Saskatchewan is a great place to make a living, and an even better place to make a life,” Wall said.
